Scarlett Johansson made her directorial debut with "Eleanor the Great," receiving a five-minute standing ovation. The film stars June Squibb, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Jessica Hecht, and follows a spirited 94-year-old woman whose storytelling takes a dangerous turn. Jafar Panahi, the renowned Iranian filmmaker, returned to Cannes with "It Was Just an Accident," marking his first in-person premiere in over 15 years. The film, competing for the Palme d'Or, explores themes of justice and forgiveness, reflecting Panahi's own experiences with political repression in Iran.

The festival was not without poignant moments. A tragic event cast a shadow when Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna, featured in the documentary "Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk," was killed in an Israeli airstrike. The festival released a statement expressing condolences and criticizing the ongoing violence in Gaza. On opening day, over 350 filmmakers and actors, including Jonathan Glazer and Pedro Almodóvar, signed a letter condemning the killing and denouncing the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
