Five suspects have been arrested following a viral video showing the alleged armed robbery of an e-hailing driver in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg.
The suspects, aged between 15 and 21, allegedly robbed the 20-year-old driver in Extension 7 on Tuesday.
According to police, the driver had responded to a ride request to collect a passenger on Maine Street.
A female passenger reportedly entered the front passenger seat and asked the driver to wait for her brothers. Two male suspects subsequently joined them in the vehicle.
Footage circulating on X shows one of the suspects engaging the handbrake after the second male passenger entered the vehicle, while the others allegedly robbed the driver.
The stolen items included an undisclosed amount of money, the driver's driver's licence, identity document and bank cards.
The driver managed to escape from the vehicle. In the video, one of the suspects can allegedly be heard instructing a fourth suspect, who was outside the vehicle, to “shoot him”.
One of the suspects reportedly fired a shot at the driver while demanding his cellphone. The group eventually fled without taking the device.
Police arrested the five suspects after following up on information linked to the incident.
No injuries were reported during the alleged robbery.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges relating to armed robbery and firearm offences.
