At least 30 people have been killed after two trains collided in southern Spain, according to a local leader.
The incident occurred south of the capital, Madrid, involving a Renfe train and a train operated by Iryo, which runs services between Madrid and Seville.
More than 500 passengers were travelling on the trains involved, according to a spokesperson for the regional government.
Emergency services are responding to the incident, although further details about the circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has expressed shock over the accident, saying he is in constant contact with the country’s Transport Minister.
A 17-year-old passenger who was travelling on one of the trains described the scene as chaotic, telling a Spanish broadcaster that it was a catastrophe.
