South Africa has bounced back from its opening Test defeat to secure an innings-and-31-run victory over Australia in the second Test at St George’s Park on Thursday, levelling the three-match series.
Despite persistent rain disrupting play on the fifth day, the Proteas claimed the six remaining wickets they needed to seal the win.
South Africa, who suffered a heavy defeat in the first Test in Durban last week, recovered from 110 for six in their first innings to declare on 425 for nine, with captain Temba Bavuma leading the charge with a career-best 179.
Marco Jansen then delivered a standout bowling performance, claiming five wickets as Australia were bowled out for just 99 runs and forced to follow on for the first time since 2019.
The tourists showed greater resistance in their second innings, with Travis Head scoring 121 and nightwatchman Scott Boland contributing 40 runs off 166 balls.
However, Wiaan Mulder broke through Australia's resistance by dismissing both batters as the Proteas continued their push for victory.
Jansen ultimately sealed the result by dismissing Josh Hazlewood, bowling Australia out for 295 and securing a comprehensive win for the reigning world Test champions.
The result sets up a decisive third Test in Cape Town next week, with both teams battling to win the series.
