Johannesburg Water has warned residents in Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg, against using their water supply amid concerns about possible contamination following repairs to a damaged pipeline.
The pipeline was repaired on Wednesday after a tree stump fell onto it during excavation work by a contractor replacing a sewer pipe.
The bulk water supplier said it was collecting water samples for laboratory testing to determine whether the supply meets the required water quality standards.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised not to use the water until further notice.
“An alternative water supply will continue to be provided while restrictions remain in place. Johannesburg Water will notify affected customers once laboratory tests have confirmed that the water meets the required quality standards and normal water supply can safely resume,” the entity said.
The affected areas include 8th Avenue and the intersections of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th streets.
Residents have been urged to adhere to the restrictions while testing is underway. Johannesburg Water will provide an update once the water has been confirmed safe for use.
