Police are using CCTV footage to help identify suspects following the fatal assault of a foreign national in Durban’s central business district on Thursday morning.

The victim, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people.

According to police, CCTV cameras monitoring the CBD captured a group of marchers moving along Dr Pixley kaSeme Street towards Maud Mfusi Street.

The footage reportedly showed two men breaking away from the group and approaching the victim, who was standing on the roadside. The pair appeared to engage him in conversation.

When the cameras returned to the area some time later, the man was lying on the ground, while the group of marchers had left.

The victim sustained swelling to the back of his head. Police have not yet established what was used in the alleged assault.

The motive for the attack remains unknown.

Investigators are following several leads and are using available evidence, including CCTV footage, to identify and apprehend the suspects.
