More than 100 students have been affected by a stomach-related illness outbreak at Rhodes University in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.

The university says it is closely monitoring reported cases, with affected students receiving medical attention.

Cases have also been reported in other parts of Makhanda, raising concerns about the possible spread of the illness.

As part of its response, the institution has initiated urgent water quality testing at its student residences to establish whether the water supply could be linked to the outbreak.

The university has also urged students and staff to maintain strict hygiene and follow recommended safety practices.

The cause of the outbreak remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation.
