E-hailing operators and food delivery riders are expected to join a motorcade in Durban on Wednesday afternoon as part of ongoing protests against illegal immigration.

The demonstration is being organised by March and March, which says the motorcade forms part of a series of protests planned until after next month’s elections.

Organisers say the protest will begin at 3pm to avoid disrupting matric examinations.

The convoy is expected to start near Berea Centre, although its final destination has not yet been confirmed.

However, eThekwini Metro Police spokesperson Boyise Zungu says the municipality has not received a formal request for the motorcade.

Zungu says authorities became aware of the planned demonstration through social media but have assured the public that law enforcement officers will monitor the procession.

She says both the South African Police Service and Metro Police will be deployed to maintain order, protect the public and minimise disruptions to traffic.

Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal E-hailing Council has distanced itself from the planned motorcade.

Council representative Mzo Ngcobo says the organisation will not participate in Wednesday’s demonstration, adding that it had not been consulted about the initiative.

Ngcobo says the council will not prevent individual operators from taking part in the protest, whether or not they are affiliated with the organisation.

The planned motorcade comes amid continued demonstrations by groups calling for action against illegal immigration.
