Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has held what US officials described as “very productive and constructive discussions” with envoys of US President Donald Trump in Oslo, Norway.
The talks, held on Tuesday, focused on new proposals and a coordinated approach to engaging Russia as diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine continue.
A US official told AFP that Ukraine presented new ideas and proposals, which were discussed in detail. The official added that the discussions had made meaningful progress towards aligning the parties on a common strategy for engaging Moscow.
Following the Oslo meeting, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will participate in the meeting virtually.
The discussions come amid efforts by Washington and Kyiv to repair strained relations following Trump's announcement of a diesel deal with Russia and pressure on Zelensky to bring the conflict to an end.
The meeting between Witkoff and Putin is aimed at building on the progress made in Oslo and establishing a pathway towards direct three-way talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
The US official acknowledged that significant work remains but described the discussions as positive, highlighting cooperation among the parties and their shared determination to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace.
