Indian police are investigating a shooting attempt targeting Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai, after gunmen allegedly opened fire on his car as he left a football ground.
The 36-year-old actor escaped without sustaining any gunshot wounds in the incident, which occurred on Sunday evening in the Juhu suburb.
Videos circulating online showed at least two men firing multiple shots at close range towards the front passenger seat of Shroff’s vehicle as it moved slowly past a crowd.
Police said two people, including the actor’s driver, were injured in the incident.
Three suspects were detained in Rajasthan on Monday in connection with the shooting. Rajasthan police said two of the suspects were from Haryana and Bihar and had been living in Mumbai for several years. The third suspect is a minor.
The suspects were expected to be handed over to Mumbai Police for further investigation.
The shooting has sparked concern across Bollywood, with celebrities and political leaders calling for stronger security measures.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited Shroff following the incident and said the actor had been left shaken by the attack.
“These attempts to intimidate people will not be tolerated, and we will put an end to this hooliganism,” Shinde said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the shooting as serious and condemnable, adding that police would arrest those responsible.
He also assured Shroff that the government would take steps to ensure his safety.
Meanwhile, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) condemned the attack, alleging that criminal gangs were deliberately targeting members of the film industry to create fear and extort money from celebrities.
The association criticised the authorities for failing to prevent such incidents and called for strict action against those responsible, as well as improved security for film industry workers and their families.
Police have not yet confirmed who was behind the shooting.
However, Indian media reports have circulated an audio recording in which a man claiming to be associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang allegedly takes responsibility for the attack. The authenticity of the recording has not been independently verified, and police have not confirmed any link to the gang.
The group has previously been linked in media reports to attacks targeting prominent figures in India.
In 2024, police arrested two people allegedly connected to the gang over a shooting at the home of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.
The same year, influential politician Baba Siddique was shot dead in Mumbai in a killing reportedly linked to individuals associated with the gang.
Shroff, the son of veteran Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff, made his film debut in Heropanti in 2014 and has since become known for his action films, dancing and martial arts skills.
He is also a professional footballer who made his debut for Mumbai FC in October 2024 during a regional tournament.
The actor was reportedly leaving the football ground after his regular practice session when the shooting occurred.
