The Jacob Zuma Foundation says former president Jacob Zuma is in high spirits and recovering well in hospital after being admitted to a facility in Pietermaritzburg last week.
The foundation has welcomed the government's call for the public and media to respect Zuma's medical privacy.
Foundation spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi has also thanked members of the public for their messages of support and well wishes for the former president.
Manyi says the latest update from someone who had been with Zuma indicated that he was doing well, joking and showing an interest in upcoming programmes.
He says there is no immediate cause for alarm, adding that Zuma is already looking forward to returning to the stage to sing his signature song, Umshini Wami.
Manyi has also criticised journalists camping outside the hospital, calling on the media to respect the former president's privacy during his recovery.
The foundation says it appreciates the public's concern but has urged people to allow Zuma the space to recuperate without unnecessary intrusion.
