The United Nations Human Rights Office has congratulated former High Commissioner Navi Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
Video footage shared on social media platform X showed a surprised Pillay arriving at the Nuremberg Palace of Justice in Germany, where she joked that she was still trying to verify the news.
UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Shabia Mantoo welcomed the announcement, praising Pillay for her longstanding commitment to defending human rights.
Mantoo said the award was particularly significant at a time when people continue to speak out against human rights violations around the world.
She expressed the office’s delight at the recognition, extending congratulations on behalf of its staff, colleagues and those who have worked alongside Pillay.
Pillay also reacted to the announcement after arriving in Germany, where she serves as president of the Advisory Council of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy.
She said it was fitting to receive the news while surrounded by friends and colleagues who share her commitment to human rights.
Pillay highlighted her recent work on a report concerning Gaza, which characterised the situation there as genocide.
She said the report had prompted people to commend her courage, a reaction that had left her surprised.
“One of the main reactions to that report is paying tribute to me for my courage and you can imagine how surprised I was. Why would you need courage to speak the truth,” Pillay said.
The Nobel Peace Prize recognises efforts to promote peace and advance human rights, with Pillay’s award highlighting her work in defending fundamental rights and speaking out against violations.
