A vehicle has been torched at the Constitutional Hill Human Rights Precinct as fresh protests erupted in Johannesburg on Friday.
Authorities say multiple demonstrations have been reported in the Johannesburg CBD, with protesters expected to gather at the Constitutional Court.
Motorists and members of the public have been urged to avoid affected areas and exercise extreme caution as tensions remain high.
The protests follow a Constitutional Court judgment delivered on 7 July, which declared certain provisions of the Refugees Act unconstitutional and invalid.
The court ruled that asylum seekers could not be denied access to the asylum system solely because of procedural failures.
The judgment was followed by violent protests in Durban and Soweto, where more than 20 vehicles were set alight.
Meanwhile, the Department of Home Affairs on Friday withdrew a directive issued on 28 September relating to the intake of asylum applications.
The department said refugee reception centres had come under pressure within days of the directive being implemented, prompting a fresh process to establish a safer and more manageable system for processing asylum applications.
The latest demonstrations come amid growing tensions over the country’s asylum application process and calls for changes to how refugee reception centres operate.
