Residents across parts of eThekwini have been warned of reduced water availability following a technical failure affecting the bulk water supply to the Durban Heights Treatment Works.

The eThekwini Municipality says the failure at uMngeni-uThukela Water’s pumping system has reduced the City’s bulk water supply by approximately 50 million litres a day.

Repairs are currently underway and are expected to be completed by Thursday.

In the meantime, the reduced flow could affect areas supplied by the Northern Aqueduct and Mount Moriah Reservoir. The municipality says it is prioritising the management of reservoir levels to prevent them from being completely depleted while the reduced supply continues.

Areas that could experience reduced water availability include Pinetown, New Germany, Clermont, KwaDabeka and surrounding areas, as well as parts of Phoenix, Newlands, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma, Umhlanga and Durban North.

Other affected areas include:

  • Mount Moriah Reservoir: Pinetown, parts of New Germany, New Germany Industrial Area, Sarnia, Cowies Hill, Nazareth, Mosely Park, KwaDabeka, Clermont and Berkshire Downs.
  • Phoenix: Mount Edgecombe, Mount Edgecombe Estate, Broadlands, Southgate, Stonebridge, Clayfield, Campbells Town, Greenbury, Sunford, Hannaford, Longcroft, Longbury, Plaza, Southbury, Eastbury, Grove End, Sastri Park, Caneside, Canehaven, Woodview, Redfern, Phoenix Industrial Park, Fernham, Whetstone, Bridge City and surrounding areas.

  • Durban North: Redhill, Durban North, Beachway, Athlone, Japanese Garden and Riverside.

  • Amaoti and surrounding areas: Amaoti, Matikwe, Mzinyathi, Silwane, Mgangeni, Senzokuhle and Amatata.
