The search for a 16-year-old boy who went missing while swimming at Cape Vidal Beach on KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast is expected to resume on Monday morning.
The teenager, from Mtubatuba, was swimming with a 14-year-old friend on Saturday when the pair were caught in rip currents.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said emergency services responded to reports of a drowning in progress.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a woman from Benoni, who was visiting the area, entered the water to assist the two teenagers.
The 14-year-old was successfully brought back to shore by the good Samaritan, while the 16-year-old remained missing.
An NSRI rescue craft was launched and extensive searches were conducted both in the surf zone and further out to sea.
Despite the efforts of rescuers and shoreline search teams, there was no sign of the missing teenager.
The 14-year-old was taken to hospital for further treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
Search operations are expected to continue on Monday as authorities work to locate the missing teenager.
