A well-known KwaZulu-Natal e-hailing driver and businessman, Sbonelo “Vacca” Ngema, is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday following his fatal shooting during an alleged robbery.
The 29-year-old was shot outside his residence in the early hours of Friday, September 25, after returning from work in Buffelsdraai, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), Ngema was killed during a robbery at his home.
It is alleged that Ngema's girlfriend and a friend were confronted and robbed by armed men, who assaulted them while demanding money.
The suspects were reportedly told that there was a safe containing cash at Ngema's residence. They allegedly proceeded to the property, forced open a burglar guard and entered the house.
The suspects reportedly removed a safe containing an undisclosed amount of money, as well as a licensed firearm belonging to Ngema, who was still at work at the time.
Ngema's girlfriend was allegedly forced to unlock her cellphone and access her banking application. The suspects reportedly checked her account balance before transferring R10 000 from the account.
As the suspects were leaving the property, they allegedly encountered Ngema arriving home from work.
He was confronted at the gate and shot once in the face before the suspects fled in his vehicle. Ngema died at the scene.
No arrests have been reported in connection with the killing.
A memorial vigil is scheduled to take place on Buffelsdraai Road in Verulam on Friday evening.
Ngema's funeral service will be held at the uMgababa Sports Field on Saturday.
