Cabinet is stepping up preparations for the possible impact of an El Niño weather event this year and into next year, amid concerns over water security, agriculture and food supplies.

Government says measures are being put in place to reduce the potential impact on communities and municipal water systems, particularly in areas already experiencing water shortages.

Deputy Government Spokesperson William Baloyi says authorities are working to ensure that communities are informed and prepared for possible changes in weather conditions.

“We want the citizens to be alerted of what is to come. Very soon through the Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS), we will publish the public campaign parts when it’s finalised,” Baloyi said.

He cautioned that the effects of El Niño would depend on how the weather phenomenon develops and on local weather conditions.

“El Niño is a climate phenomenon, and its impact depends on how it develops and on local weather conditions,” he said.

Baloyi says South Africa is preparing for the possibility of hotter and drier conditions, as well as below-normal rainfall in some parts of the country, particularly during the current season.

Government is expected to provide further information to the public as preparations and awareness campaigns are finalised.
