The University of Fort Hare’s Council has reversed its earlier decision and agreed to shorten the notice period of suspended Vice-Chancellor Professor Sakhela Buhlungu.
Buhlungu submitted his resignation on Monday, shortly before he was due to begin presenting his defence at a disciplinary hearing.
Council initially rejected his request to leave with immediate effect, citing the notice period stipulated in his employment contract.
However, in a communique issued on Wednesday, the university said it had reconsidered the matter and agreed to reduce the notice period.
Buhlungu will now leave his position on 23 October, despite having requested that his resignation take effect immediately.
Council said the disciplinary proceedings against him would continue until they are concluded, despite the decision to shorten his notice period.
“Council further confirms that the disciplinary proceedings currently underway will continue to their conclusion, in accordance with the applicable procedures and principles of due process,” the university said.
Council said its decision followed careful consideration of the matter and reaffirmed its commitment to “fairness, consistency, procedural integrity and the best interest of the University.”
Buhlungu faces several disciplinary charges, including alleged gross misconduct, insubordination and bringing the university into disrepute.
One of the allegations against him is that he unlawfully appointed two executive directors.
