Men are being urged to take a stand against gender-based violence and femicide as civic organisation March and March prepares to hold a national day of action on Wednesday.
The organisation has planned demonstrations in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, with the main procession in Durban.
Participants are expected to gather at Albert Park from 9am before marching through the city.
March and March says memoranda will also be handed over to authorities during processions taking place in other parts of the country.
The campaign is aimed at encouraging men to confront gender-based violence and take greater responsibility for preventing violence in their homes and communities.
The organisation says the recent murders of women, along with a series of mass shootings across the country, have highlighted the need for communities to take action against violence.
March and March spokesperson Sandile Dube says the organisation wants to engage men and young boys before violent behaviour becomes entrenched.
“We are hoping to get into [the] mind of a man. We are hoping to get into [the] mind of a young boy that one day will get to a stage of being a man and take control of the issues around family, issues in society, and in the workplace,” Dube says.
He says the organisation hopes to challenge attitudes towards violence and encourage both men and women to oppose all forms of gender-based violence.
Durban Metro Police have confirmed that protesters will travel from Albert Park towards Joseph Nduli Street before proceeding along Dr Pixley KaSeme Street and Mahatma Gandhi Road.
The marchers are expected to hand over a memorandum of demands to police at the station.
Dube says the organisation is calling on men from all communities and backgrounds to participate.
“We're calling for all men, hence we termed our march an all-men march against gender-based violence. So it's a national day of action against gender-based violence and femicide,” he says.
The organisation is also encouraging men from different religious and community groups to take part in the demonstration.
