Five men accused of murdering two Crime Intelligence officers in Durban are expected to apply for bail when they return to court next month.
The accused Simangaliso Tembe, Mduduzi Myeza, Bongani Zulu, Wandile Nyawo and Sibusiso Sibisi are facing charges linked to the deaths of Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo.
The officers were allegedly ambushed in Mount Edgecombe in late April. Nel died at the scene, while Khuzwayo succumbed to his injuries in hospital almost a month later.
The five suspects were arrested on Friday during a series of police operations in eThekwini and along the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.
During an operation in Inanda, one suspect was killed in a shootout, while a member of the police Special Task Force was wounded.
The accused made their first appearance in court on Monday, with the proceedings attended by relatives, journalists and several law enforcement officers.
Public Order Police maintained a heavy presence both inside and outside the court precinct.
During the brief proceedings, the State informed the court that it was ready to proceed with the bail applications.
However, prosecutors indicated that they would oppose bail for all five accused.
The matter was postponed to mid-October, when the accused are expected to formally bring their bail applications.
