The man accused of a series of rapes in Cato Manor, Durban, is now facing 27 charges after the State added further counts to the case.
The 46-year-old appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where additional charges including kidnapping, housebreaking with intent to rape and theft were brought against him.
The accused has also abandoned his plans to apply for bail.
The alleged rape incidents took place between 2014 and 2025, mainly in the Cato Manor area.
The accused, who cannot be named until he has pleaded in court, was arrested more than a week ago in the Obuka area near Melmoth.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the matter was postponed to allow for further investigations.
She says the State initially brought 15 charges against the accused, but that number has now increased to 27.
“The state added various other charges, including housebreaking with the intent to rape as well as assault, kidnapping amongst some of those charges,” Ramkisson-Kara said.
The case has been postponed to 28 October 2026 for a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions and to allow investigations to continue.
The accused remains in custody.
