Cabinet has approved a three-year extension for Mteto Nyati to continue serving as chairperson of Eskom’s board.
Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced the decision on Friday, confirming that Nyati’s current term, which was due to end in October, would be extended until 2029.
The extension comes as Eskom continues efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity system and improve the utility’s performance.
Nyati said he had accepted the decision with a clear understanding of the responsibility that comes with leading the power utility’s board.
“There has been significant public interest in whether this term will be renewed. That interest is legitimate,” Nyati said.
He said the public’s interest in the appointment went beyond the position itself and reflected broader expectations about Eskom and the country’s electricity challenges.
“When South Africa asks about the appointment, they are not asking about the title. They are asking whether this country still has the will to fix what matters. That question is not lost on me,” he said.
Nyati will now continue as Eskom board chairperson for another three years following Cabinet’s approval.
