Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate an 11-year-old boy who went missing while swimming at Silver Beach in Port Edward on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.
The Grade 6 learner, who is from the Eastern Cape, was on a school excursion when he was apparently caught in rip currents on Tuesday.
The National Sea Rescue Institute says the boy was swimming with another learner when he was swept away.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the other children who had been swimming with the boy were safely brought out of the water and placed in the care of their guardians.
Despite extensive searches along the coastline and at sea, there has been no sign of the missing learner.
Lambinon says police divers, search and rescue teams, as well as the Water Policing and Diving Service, are continuing with the search.
Authorities are urging members of the public to remain clear of the search area while emergency teams continue their efforts to locate the child.
