Durban has experienced heavy rain and hail, with motorists reporting flooded roads and hazardous driving conditions as severe thunderstorms move across KwaZulu-Natal.
Authorities say the adverse weather is being caused by a cut-off low-pressure system, bringing heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds to parts of the province.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads.
“The MEC has requested motorists to exercise extra caution. Motorists must reduce speed and maintain the following distance,” Sibiya said.
He warned road users to be mindful of slippery roads and reduced visibility during the severe weather.
The province’s Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) teams have been deployed along strategic routes to monitor traffic and assist where necessary.
Sibiya says the teams are working alongside municipalities and other government departments to respond to weather-related incidents.
“Human settlements teams are monitoring high-risk areas and will also intervene quickly where necessary,” he said.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in southern and eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
The north-western parts of the province and the northern central interior are also under a Level 2 warning for potentially damaging winds.
Motorists and residents in affected areas are being urged to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel where possible and follow weather and traffic advisories.
