Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth says South Africa are embracing the rare opportunity to face New Zealand across four consecutive weekends as one of rugby’s biggest rivalries reaches its finale in Baltimore.
The Springboks and All Blacks will meet for the fourth successive weekend, with New Zealand desperate to claim a victory and restore pride, while South Africa will look to secure the series in a historic Test in the United States.
Etzebeth admits the demanding schedule has taken its toll, but says playing the All Blacks so frequently is also a privilege.
“It is brutal but it’s also a massive privilege to play against the All Blacks four weekends in a row. It’s great for all of us,” Etzebeth said.
The veteran lock says preparations for the opening Test were particularly demanding, but the teams now have a much better understanding of each other.
He believes that familiarity has reduced the need for extensive preparation ahead of each match.
“And now, I think it’s almost less preparation every week,” he said.
“We know them, we know one or two tweaks will be made. We know what’s coming but it’s nonetheless a lekker challenge.”
The Springboks will face the All Blacks again on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 23:00 South African time.
