A Durban family is holding onto hope that their daughter will be found alive after she was reported missing following devastating flash floods in Nepal.
Terricia Govender, who turned 33 on Tuesday, was in Nepal as part of a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash when severe flooding struck near the Nepal-Tibet border.
Her family says the uncertainty has left them feeling helpless, particularly as they remain thousands of kilometres away from the disaster zone.
Terricia’s mother, Linda Govender, said the family was informed by the Isha Foundation, which organised the pilgrimage, that her daughter was among six South Africans reported missing.
“We are absolutely devastated about what has happened. But right now, we hope and pray that the rescue team can get to her and the others and bring them home,” Govender said.
“I just want Terricia home right now.”
The family has received communication from the Gift of the Givers and the Nepalese government, while numerous people have also reached out with information.
However, Govender said none of the updates received so far have provided the positive news the family is desperately hoping for.
The search for Terricia and the other missing South Africans continues as rescue teams work in areas affected by the floods.
The family remains hopeful that the missing pilgrims will be located and safely reunited with their loved ones.
