Double Fine Productions is paying tribute to legendary actor Tim Curry by making its heavy-metal strategy game Brutal Legend free to download and keep on PC for a limited time.
Curry, who died on Thursday at the age of 80, voiced the character Doviculus in the 2009 game, which was developed by Double Fine founder Tim Schafer.
The studio announced that Brutal Legend would be available at no cost for 666 minutes on Thursday, August 27, in a tribute to Curry and his role in the game.
"Rest in peace, dark prince," Double Fine said in a message accompanying the giveaway.
The game combines heavy-metal music, action and real-time strategy elements and has developed a strong following since its release.
Curry was best known for his iconic portrayal of Dr Frank-N-Furter in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but his career also extended into the gaming industry.
He lent his distinctive voice to several video games, including Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers and Dragon Age: Origins, in addition to Brutal Legend.
Double Fine's tribute comes shortly after the studio regained ownership and publishing rights to its games following its separation from Microsoft.
The independent developer has also announced plans to revive its Amnesia Fortnight game jam as it explores ideas for its next projects.
For fans of Curry and Brutal Legend, the limited-time giveaway offers an opportunity to revisit one of the actor's memorable contributions to the world of video games while celebrating his legacy.
