Police have seized two consignments of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of more than R200 million at OR Tambo International Airport, east of Johannesburg.
The drugs were intercepted in two separate operations at the airport, according to national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
In the first incident, officers intercepted two large travel suitcases at an airport terminal. The suitcases allegedly contained approximately 84 kilograms of suspected cocaine packed into blocks.
A second seizure was made in the airport's cargo section, where police discovered four boxes containing approximately 250 kilograms of suspected cocaine.
The drugs were reportedly packed into 220 blocks.
Mathe said the combined street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be more than R200 million.
No arrests have been made in connection with either seizure, and investigations are continuing.
Lieutenant General Dimpane commended the multidisciplinary team involved in the operations, praising officers for their vigilance and continued efforts to disrupt drug trafficking through South Africa's major international entry points.
Police say the seizures form part of ongoing efforts to prevent illicit drugs from entering the country through key transport hubs.
