A Durban-based nurse accused of slapping a patient at King Dinuzulu Hospital is set to be placed on precautionary suspension while an investigation into the incident gets underway.

A video allegedly showing the incident has been widely circulated on social media. The footage appears to show a healthcare worker striking a patient, who is seated on a hospital bed, across the face while allegedly making inappropriate remarks.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health says it has launched an urgent investigation into the alleged conduct.

Departmental spokesperson Nathi Olifant says such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at public healthcare facilities.

“We confirm that we are investigating this specific conduct as a matter of urgency. Corporal punishment has no place in our facilities,” Olifant said.

He added that the department is committed to ensuring that patients are treated with dignity, respect and appropriate care.

Olifant said disciplinary action would be taken once the investigation has been completed.

The nurse is expected to remain on precautionary suspension while the matter is being investigated.
