A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a human trafficking investigation involving a Durban businessman accused of luring women into sex work under false pretences.
The Hawks confirmed that a 48-year-old man handed himself over to police at the Durban North Police Station on Thursday evening.
He faces charges of human trafficking, sexual assault and kidnapping and is expected to appear in court on Friday.
The arrest comes two days after another businessman from Umhlanga appeared in court on similar charges.
The businessman is accused of recruiting women from Johannesburg by promising them employment in Durban, only for them to allegedly be forced into sex work.
The women, who are from Eldorado Park, were rescued from a property in 2022.
The court previously heard that the victims believed they had been recruited to sell SIM cards to customers at a private casino.
Instead, they were allegedly confined to a house and had their movements closely monitored.
The businessman was recently named during testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of corruption, criminality and interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
He is expected to apply for bail later this month as investigations into the alleged trafficking network continue.
