The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard a recording of a conversation between the late Bevan Loftus and tow-truck operator Clive Naicker, in which Loftus confronted Naicker over an alleged R2.5 million contract on his life.
The recording was played before the commission as part of its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Loftus' death and allegations involving members of the Cash in Transit Task Team.
In the conversation, Loftus accused Naicker of allegedly putting a R2.5 million hit on him and questioned why he would want him killed.
Naicker denied the allegations during the conversation.
Loftus was shot and killed on 1 April 2023 in an incident allegedly involving members of the Cash in Transit Task Team. The team was led by Hawks officer Deena Govender at the time.
In the recording, Loftus can be heard confronting Naicker and questioning his alleged involvement.
“Mr Clive himself, how are you? Black car. A lot of money, 2.5 on my head now? How you can phone to him to tell him to set me up?” Loftus says in the recording.
He goes on to question why Naicker would allegedly target him, saying he had never had a dispute with the tow-truck operator.
“Me, I never ever fought with you. I got no problem with you. But you look like you after me,” Loftus says.
Loftus also alleges in the recording that Naicker was paying Deena Govender and other individuals to target him.
“You paying Deena Govender, you paying all the carers. You went past to do all these things to me. I never had nothing to do with you. I never minded your business,” he says.
The recording forms part of the commission's broader investigation into allegations surrounding Loftus' killing, including the conduct of members of the Cash in Transit Task Team and their alleged links to organised criminal activity.
The commission is expected to examine the recording and other evidence as it continues investigating the circumstances leading up to Loftus' death.
