The African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA) in KwaZulu-Natal says farmers across the province have so far reported no major incidents despite ongoing cold, wet and snowy weather.
AFASA is monitoring the impact of the adverse conditions on farmers and livestock, particularly in areas affected by disruptive snowfall.
The South African Weather Service has warned of possible isolated losses of vulnerable livestock and crops in south-western KwaZulu-Natal, where a Yellow Level 2 warning remains in place for disruptive snow.
Transport officials have also been working through the night to prevent snow from accumulating on major roads and to keep key routes accessible.
AFASA's Lloyd Hadebe says farmers were warned in advance to prepare for the severe weather and ensure that livestock was adequately protected.
He says the association has so far not received reports of any major incidents among its members.
“Our concern is that because it's wintertime and on the fields there, there's not enough grass for animals, it's going to be worse towards our small farmers,” Hadebe said.
He added that AFASA and its members had taken precautions ahead of the adverse weather.
“But we were ready as AFASA and our members, for this particular weather,” he said.
Despite the lack of major incidents so far, AFASA says it will continue monitoring conditions, particularly in rural areas where limited grazing and harsh winter temperatures could place additional pressure on small-scale farmers and their livestock.
