A chance encounter at a US airport has led to an extraordinary fundraising campaign that could allow a 64-year-old airport worker to retire after years of working despite severe mobility problems.
The story began when passenger Thackery spotted James Blair, a partially disabled airport worker, struggling to walk across the tarmac while preparing to board a flight from Los Angeles.
Moved by what she saw, Thackery recorded a video of Blair and posted it on TikTok, asking viewers if they knew who he was and whether there was a way to help him.
The footage quickly went viral, attracting millions of views and an outpouring of support.
Blair was eventually identified as a US Navy veteran who served from 1980 to 1990 before returning to civilian life and working as a fuel mechanic.
He has worked at John Wayne Airport since 2006, despite suffering from severely deteriorated knees that have left him struggling to walk.
Blair had recently turned 64 but was unable to retire because his income helps cover the costs of hospice care for his elderly mother.
Thackery initially knew none of these details. As people continued asking how they could assist the airport worker, one viewer identified Blair.
She eventually managed to contact him through his employer because Blair does not use social media and does not own a smartphone.
His boss then drove about 90 minutes to Blair’s home to help him set up a GoFundMe campaign, which Thackery shared with her large TikTok audience.
The fundraiser has since attracted more than 6,000 donations and raised around $180,000 for Blair.
Thackery said she was overwhelmed by the response.
“I was speechless because I felt like the world showed up,” she told KSL News. “And I think in these times we need people like that.”
Blair said he was stunned by the generosity of complete strangers and that the experience had renewed his faith.
“I believed in God, but I didn’t really believe in God. But now, with the angel sitting next to you, it’s amazing,” Blair told Thackery.
He said he was particularly moved that people were willing to donate money despite many of them likely facing financial difficulties of their own.
The pair eventually met in person, where Thackery was able to shake Blair’s hand and present him with a cheque worth $174,000.
Blair later sent her a bouquet of flowers, addressing them to “The Angel” — a nickname that has since stuck.
Although Blair has not retired yet, the funds have already made a difference, with the airport worker using some of the money to buy himself a new bed.
The unexpected act of kindness has not only provided Blair with financial relief but has also given him hope that retirement may finally be within reach.
