The death toll from a deadly bus crash on the N1 north of Trompsburg in the Free State has been revised from 12 to 10.

Authorities say the updated figure follows further verification at the scene during the vehicle extrication process, which was complicated by the severity of the crash.

The bus overturned on Thursday night, about 24 kilometres north of Trompsburg towards Edenburg, leaving several passengers injured.

Some passengers who sustained minor injuries are being assessed and processed for discharge at Albert Nzula Hospital.

Free State Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said traffic is still being diverted while investigations and recovery operations continue.

“Due to the severity of the crash, some remains were initially counted more than once,” Mvambi said.

He said the bus has since been recovered and returned to an upright position, but road recovery operations remain ongoing.

“The N1 diversion remains in place until further notice. Motorists are urged to continue using the alternative routes and to exercise caution in the area,” Mvambi said.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the affected section of the N1 where possible and to remain patient as emergency and recovery teams work at the scene.
