Head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Advocate Andrea Johnson, has explained the role played by investigator Sunil Belochan in the arrest of Crime Intelligence official Dumisani Khumalo during proceedings before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Johnson's testimony follows allegations made by Witness N, who previously told the commission that Belochan had been involved in the extortion of Eastern Cape shopkeepers since the early 2000s.
Appearing before the commission in Pretoria, Johnson confirmed that Belochan, together with Ayanda Mbalo, executed the warrant of arrest for Khumalo at OR Tambo International Airport.
During the proceedings, Commissioner Sandile Khumalo questioned why officials carrying out arrests are designated as investigators.
Johnson explained that "investigator" is the official designation of the officers involved, despite one of their responsibilities being the execution of arrest warrants.
Commissioner Khumalo sought further clarity on whether conducting investigations remained their primary function, to which Johnson confirmed that it was.
The commission continues to hear evidence related to allegations of corruption and misconduct within the South African Police Service's Crime Intelligence division.
