The City of Johannesburg is considering shutting down the Marble Towers building in the Johannesburg CBD, alleging that the property has failed to comply with municipal regulations despite repeated warnings.

The move forms part of an ongoing city-wide enforcement operation targeting by-law violations, illegal trading and outstanding municipal accounts in the inner city.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said municipal officials are currently conducting inspections at Marble Towers following an enforcement operation carried out at the building about a month ago.

According to Morero, the city is concerned that the building has continued operating despite alleged non-compliance issues that were previously identified.

He said legal and emergency management teams have been deployed to the site to assess the extent of the alleged violations and determine whether the building should be shut down.

The inspection forms part of the city's broader efforts to improve compliance, enhance public safety and restore order in the Johannesburg CBD.

Morero added that officials are simultaneously intensifying operations against illegal trading, the sale of counterfeit goods and undocumented foreign nationals as part of a wider campaign to enforce municipal by-laws and reclaim the inner city.

The outcome of the assessment at Marble Towers is expected to determine whether further enforcement action, including a possible closure, will be taken.
