Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Human Resources Head Linda Gxasheka and former City Manager Imogen Mashazi are expected to apply for bail in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Friday after appearing on fraud and corruption charges.

Their bail applications follow Thursday's court proceedings, during which suspended head of legal services Advocate Kemi Behari and Ekurhuleni Metro Deputy Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi were each granted bail of R50,000.

The four officials are facing charges of fraud and corruption linked to allegations that they worked together to shield Mkhwanazi from an internal disciplinary process.

According to the State, the accused allegedly prevented disciplinary action against Mkhwanazi despite recommendations by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).

Mkhwanazi is accused of unlawfully authorising the installation of blue lights on vehicles belonging to alleged criminal cartel figure Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.

During Thursday's proceedings, prosecutors told the court that Gxasheka and Mashazi's bail applications had been postponed because authorities still needed to verify their residential addresses. The State said both accused had submitted more than one address, requiring further investigation before their applications could proceed.

The matter is expected to continue on Friday when Gxasheka and Mashazi formally apply for bail.
