A three-year-old boy is receiving medical treatment after a near-drowning incident at a home in Salt Rock, north of Durban, where a neighbour's swift response is being credited with helping save his life.

IPSS Medical Rescue responded to reports of a child drowning shortly before arriving at the scene.

Paramedics found the young boy in a critical condition after he had reportedly been submerged in a swimming pool for approximately 10 minutes.

Before emergency services arrived, the child had been pulled from the water and a neighbour, identified as Jacques Joubert, immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

IPSS Medical Rescue said the boy was stabilised at the scene before being transported to a nearby medical facility under the care of an Advanced Life Support paramedic.

Emergency responders praised Joubert's quick thinking and life-saving intervention, saying his immediate administration of CPR played a crucial role in improving the child's chances of survival and preventing a more tragic outcome.

The circumstances surrounding the near-drowning incident are not yet known.
