Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the murder of ANC Eastern Cape ward councillor Sicelo Mleve, who was gunned down during a community meeting in Gqeberha last month.

Mleve was shot and killed on 20 June while attending a meeting at a ward office in Zwide.

According to police, two armed men allegedly stormed the meeting, where about 10 people were gathered, and held those present at gunpoint before demanding their cellphones.

During the incident, Mleve was fatally shot. The motive for the attack remains under investigation.

Police have confirmed that one suspect has since been arrested in connection with the killing.

The 20-year-old accused is expected to appear in court on Friday, where he will face charges related to the murder.

Investigations are continuing as police work to trace the second suspect believed to have been involved in the attack.
