Three Lesotho nationals accused of involvement in the Cleveland mass shooting, which claimed the lives of 13 people last month, are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The accused, Michael Metsing, Rammonne Maikutlo and Molebeli Mosia, made their first court appearance last week, where the matter was postponed to allow for profiling, verification of their residential addresses and confirmation of their legal status in South Africa.

The trio were arrested last Wednesday at the KwaMai-Mai Informal Settlement in Johannesburg.

The charges relate to the mass shooting that took place at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland on 9 June. Police allege that shortly after 11pm, more than 10 armed suspects entered the settlement and opened fire on residents.

Twelve people were killed at the scene, while 15 others sustained injuries. A 13th victim later succumbed to injuries in hospital.

During the suspects' initial court appearance, relatives and friends of the victims gathered outside the courthouse in an impromptu protest, calling on the court to deny the accused bail.

The case is expected to return to court on Thursday as investigations into one of Johannesburg's deadliest recent mass shootings continue.
