Police remain on high alert as nationwide protests against undocumented foreign nationals are expected to continue following widespread disruptions on Tuesday.
Civil society groups involved in the demonstrations have vowed to maintain pressure on government authorities until their concerns over immigration are addressed.
Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, said law enforcement agencies have put measures in place to respond to any developments, noting that the situation remains unpredictable.
“Today is an unpredictable terrain; hence, we have put measures and plans in place. We policed before 6:00 last night, where we took our stock. We have policed close to 130 marches, 101 of those were peaceful,” she said.
Mosikili also commended members of the public for largely cooperating with authorities and heeding calls for calm.
“So, I must thank the South Africans for the engagement that we have, the communication that went out, the call for calmness that we have requested; they have respected,” she added.
Authorities say monitoring and security operations will continue as further demonstrations are anticipated in various parts of the country.
