Several people have been arrested for looting and attempted looting during ongoing demonstrations against undocumented immigrants taking place across South Africa.
The Police Ministry says that while the majority of marches have remained peaceful, law enforcement officers have had to respond to isolated incidents of criminal behaviour linked to the protests.
Police have maintained a high level of readiness nationwide, with increased deployments aimed at protecting businesses, safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring public order is not disrupted.
Authorities say officers will take firm action against anyone who uses the demonstrations as a cover to commit crimes.
Police Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi said law enforcement officials have been instructed to respond swiftly and decisively to any unlawful conduct.
“Members deployed across the country have been instructed to act swiftly and decisively against anyone who engages in criminal activities, including looting, attempted looting, public violence, malicious damage to property, intimidation, or any other unlawful conduct,” Mogotsi said.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has also urged members of the public to exercise their constitutional right to protest responsibly, stressing that demonstrations must remain peaceful and within the bounds of the law.
He warned that individuals who exploit the marches to commit criminal acts will face the full force of the law.
