Music legend Lionel Richie was forced to cut short the opening performance of his "Sing a Song All Night Long Tour" after reportedly falling ill on stage during a concert in Minnesota.

The 77-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer was performing at the Grand Casino Arena in Saint Paul on Wednesday alongside the iconic band Earth, Wind & Fire when he reportedly began experiencing dizziness about 55 minutes into his set.

Videos shared on social media showed Richie sitting down while performing some of his best-known hits before informing the audience that he was feeling dizzy.

The singer assured concertgoers that he would return shortly, prompting fans to wait for approximately 40 minutes while the performance was temporarily paused.

However, Richie's saxophonist, Dina Soldo, later informed the audience that the veteran entertainer was too unwell to continue with the show.

According to multiple reports, Richie was taken from the venue by ambulance and transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

One of the final songs he is believed to have performed before the concert was halted was his 1986 hit, Dancing on the Ceiling.

Earlier in the day, Richie had expressed his excitement about the start of the 26-city tour on social media, posting: "Opening night rehearsal, soundcheck... showtime tonight. St. Paul, you're up!"

Following news of the incident, fans around the world took to social media to send messages of support and wish the music icon a speedy recovery.

Concert organisers later confirmed that the remainder of the performance had been cancelled due to Richie's illness. Updates regarding postponed or rescheduled tour dates are expected once his condition has been assessed.

The "Sing a Song All Night Long Tour" is scheduled to visit 26 cities and features Richie performing alongside Earth, Wind & Fire.
