Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has pledged a R5 million bonus for every match Bafana Bafana wins during the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the national team continues its historic tournament run.
McKenzie made the announcement while addressing the squad following South Africa's landmark 1-0 victory over South Korea, which secured the country's first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup knockout stages.
The minister confirmed that the incentive would apply retrospectively, meaning the team's victory over South Korea would also be rewarded.
Bafana Bafana advanced to the Round of 32 after finishing second in Group A and are now preparing to face co-hosts Canada in the knockout stage on Sunday at 9pm.
Addressing the players, McKenzie promised that the financial rewards would increase with every successive victory.
"I am committing to you guys that for every game we win, we will give you R5 million. If you win the next game against Canada, you will have R10 million. If you win the following game against Morocco, you will have R15 million," he said.
The minister also revealed plans to engage the private sector in an effort to secure additional sponsorship and financial support for the national team as it pursues further success at the tournament.
South Africa's progression to the knockout rounds marks a historic achievement for Bafana Bafana and continues an impressive resurgence under head coach Hugo Broos.
The national team will now look to extend its memorable World Cup campaign when it takes on Canada in the Round of 32, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
