Two members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and a murder suspect were rescued following a tense standoff with an angry crowd in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday.

The incident unfolded shortly after police arrested a suspect wanted in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old man. The arrest followed an intensive two-hour search operation.

According to private security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the suspect was initially handed over to police without resistance. However, tensions escalated when a large group of community members gathered and blocked the property's exit using concrete barriers and steel drums.

The crowd allegedly demanded that the suspect be released into their custody and threatened police officers who attempted to remove him from the area.

"Several individuals openly threatened to attack the policemen if they attempted to remove the accused from the area," RUSA said in a statement.

The situation deteriorated further after the suspect was placed inside a police vehicle. Members of the crowd, some reportedly armed, began pelting the vehicle with stones and threatened to set it alight.

The two officers and the suspect remained trapped inside the barricaded area for approximately an hour as the crowd prevented their departure.

In response, a security helicopter and ground response teams were dispatched to the scene to assist. Additional police units and RUSA personnel worked together to clear the obstacles blocking the roadway and establish a safe escape route.

The officers and the suspect were eventually escorted from the area without injury.

Authorities have not indicated whether any arrests were made in connection with the obstruction of police duties or the threats directed at law enforcement officials. Investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
