The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has impounded 58 public transport vehicles, including taxis, scholar transport vehicles and e-hailing services, during a series of road safety operations conducted across the city this week.
The vehicles were seized for failing to comply with provisions of the National Land Transport Act, as authorities intensified efforts to enforce road traffic regulations and improve safety for commuters and other road users.
According to the TMPD, the operations form part of an ongoing campaign aimed at curbing unlawful practices within the public transport sector and ensuring that operators adhere to legal and safety requirements.
TMPD spokesperson Puleng Motholo said the department remains committed to taking decisive action against operators who disregard the law.
"These ongoing operations are an essential part of the department's commitment to curb lawlessness and ensure the safety of commuters and other road users. It is crucial for public transport operators to adhere to road traffic regulations in order to save lives and avoid impoundment of their vehicles," Motholo said.
She added that the metro police would continue to intensify enforcement efforts across the City of Tshwane.
"The TMPD will not leave any stone unturned when it comes to enforcement of the law in the City of Tshwane," she said.
Authorities have urged all public transport operators to ensure that their vehicles and operating permits comply with all legal and safety requirements to avoid penalties, fines and the impoundment of their vehicles.
