Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Samuel Mashaba is expected to return to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Thursday to continue his testimony regarding the controversial 2021 drug bust in Aeroton, Johannesburg.
Mashaba began giving evidence before the Commission on Wednesday, detailing how he acted on information received from an informer, identified as Tumelo Nku, about a truck allegedly transporting drugs from Durban to Johannesburg.
The Commission heard that Mashaba was among the first three law enforcement officials to arrive at the Aeroton scene, where a large quantity of suspected narcotics was reportedly discovered.
According to Mashaba, Nku cautioned him before the operation, warning that the case allegedly involved senior law enforcement officials and advising him to proceed carefully.
Mashaba testified that he intercepted the truck in question and arrested both the driver and the individual who was allegedly meant to receive the cargo after drugs were found inside the vehicle.
The inquiry has also heard allegations from Mashaba that the two suspects were subsequently released following the arrival of Crime Intelligence officer Major-General Feroz Khan at the scene.
The Madlanga Commission is investigating claims of interference, misconduct and alleged criminal activities linked to law enforcement structures, with Mashaba's testimony forming part of the inquiry's examination of the Aeroton drug bust and the events that followed.
