The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture says it is closely monitoring a suspected disease outbreak affecting pigs in parts of the province.

Veterinary teams have been deployed to conduct assessments and collect samples after several dead pigs were discovered in Gqeberha.

Farmers across the province have been urged to remain alert and report any unusual livestock deaths to authorities immediately.

Department spokesperson Athule Joka said officials are still awaiting laboratory test results while monitoring mortality rates among pigs.

“Last week, we sent our veterinary officials to conduct assessments and collect samples. We are currently awaiting results but observing the mortality rate. There are possibilities of African Swine Fever,” Joka said.

He added that African Swine Fever remains one of the possible causes being investigated.

“The disease is not known to affect humans and does not pose a public health risk, but it can be severe among pigs,” he said.

The department has also warned farmers against dumping dead animals in public spaces, saying it creates serious health and environmental risks.

“Farmers are urged to report any sudden illness in pigs to our nearest offices immediately, and pig farmers are warned not to dispose of animals in public, as it poses a public health hazard,” Joka said.

Authorities say testing and monitoring efforts are continuing while officials await confirmation from laboratory results.
