Thoko Didiza has formally tabled the Section 89 independent panel report in Parliament, paving the way for the possible establishment of an impeachment committee to assess whether a prima facie case exists against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The tabling forms part of a structured process outlined by Didiza on Monday to implement last week’s ruling by the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

The apex court directed Parliament to constitute an impeachment committee to investigate allegations relating to foreign currency stolen from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in 2020.

The submission of the report marks the first of five procedural steps announced by the Speaker to formally brief the National Assembly and initiate the constitutional process.

Further steps include providing the report to President Ramaphosa and commencing arrangements for the formation of the impeachment committee.

Meanwhile, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has expressed support for Ramaphosa’s decision to take Parliament’s independent panel report on judicial review.

The President confirmed the move during a national address on Monday, following the Constitutional Court’s ruling, and said he would challenge aspects of the panel’s findings through the courts while remaining committed to the legal process.
