Scores of supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters are expected to gather outside the Constitutional Court of South Africa on Friday morning ahead of judgment in the high-profile Phala Phala matter.
The EFF approached the court seeking to overturn Parliament’s decision to block an impeachment inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The case centres on the theft of more than US$500,000 from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Farm in February 2020 and the subsequent handling of the matter.
EFF spokesperson Thembi Msane said the party has consistently pushed for accountability regarding the foreign currency allegedly kept at the farm and the actions taken after the theft.
Msane said the party expects the court to ensure that the Section 89 panel report is returned to Parliament for proper legal consideration and accountability processes.
The Constitutional Court confirmed earlier this week that judgment would be handed down on Friday, 8 May 2026.
The matter stems from a legal challenge brought by the EFF and the African Transformation Movement after the National Assembly of South Africa voted in December 2022 against establishing an impeachment inquiry.
At the time, the African National Congress used its parliamentary majority to reject findings by an independent panel that concluded Ramaphosa may have breached provisions of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.
The judgment is expected to provide clarity on Parliament’s constitutional obligations when dealing with impeachment proceedings involving a sitting president.
